Support at the heel is achieved by a soft foam solution. (By comparison, the Nike Zoom Freak 1 has a traditional midsole/outsole build.) Furthermore, a Zoom Air unit was added to the model with no foam above or below it to minimize obstruction between foot and Zoom Air and Zoom Air and floor. With this knowledge, the Nike Zoom Freak 2's outsole was separated into two pieces bridged together with a supportive shank in the midsole. To this end, Klein and his team studied the forward's feet and discovered they required unorthodox support when propelling into and landing from the Euro-step.

Led by Nike Basketball Senior Design Director Ross Klein, the model's design was approached with one core mission: to maximize the effectiveness of Antetokounmpo's Euro-step. First teased unofficially in March 2020, the silhouette – which has been compared to the Nike PG 1 – officially debuts on July 25th, 2020 in a “Naija” colorway inspired by the Milwaukee Bucks forward's Nigerian heritage. The Nike Zoom Freak 2 is Giannis Antetokounmpo's second signature sneaker with Nike.
